- Pulled the vehicle into the shop and immediately verified a loud grinding noise coming from the alternator. Inspection found the alternator bearings are failing and the alternator is beginning to come apart. A failing alternator bearing can create excessive drag on the engine and may intermittently begin to seize, which can cause the surging or sudden changes in engine RPM the customer is experiencing. If the alternator locks up completely, it can throw or break the serpentine belt, cause the vehicle to stall, and leave the vehicle without a charging system. Recommendation: Recommend replacing the alternator immediately due to the severe bearing failure. After replacement, verify proper charging system operation and road test the vehicle to confirm the surging concern has been resolved. made repairs started vehicle found that it was still surging checked plugs fuel trims and exhaust back pressure and oil found that it was 3 quarts low added oil now vehicle is running good. Recommend engine oil flush with oil change.
